You Old Fish-Eyed Fool….

By Jason

It so happens that one of Veta’s (and my) favorite television shows is Sanford and Son.  The above title of this post is one of Aunt Ester’s many crude insults that usually were directed at Fred.  I really couldn’t think of a better name for this post :)

As many of you know, I’m a Nikon fanatic and a firm believer that they make one of the finest camera systems money can buy.  From camera bodies and lenses, through flashes and other accessories, you’d be hard pressed to top Nikon.  However, Veta and I are also film (movie) fanatics and making movies is one of our secret desires.  We really would like to give writing and shooting films a shot.

I’m about to go technical (read: boring) on you, but please stay with me if nothing else for the last link in this post.  If you keep up with camera systems and capabilities, you might know that a recent development for digital SLRs (what we shoot) is the capability for capturing high quality video.  Being the pioneers that they are, Nikon released the first DSLR (D90) capable of shooting video less than a year ago.  However, about 2 weeks after Nikon’s release, Canon released a full frame DSLR (EOS 5D Mark II) that is capable of so much more.  Not only does it shoot video, it shoots 1080p high definition video through it’s full frame sensor, has a microphone input, and captures video in a .MOV format with h.264 encoding.  If you’re into digital video, it’s cool!

There was only one problem with the Canon.  I didn’t have one or any Canon lenses.

With the blessing of business to pay for our endeavors, we purchased a Canon EOS 5D Mark II.  We also picked up a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, a 50mm f/1.8 lens, and most recently a 15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens - hence the name of this post.  There are a couple more lenses to add to the list, but we have to build up some more business first.  Hopefully, soon, we’ll be posting some video on our blog for you to view.  In the meantime, please take a look at a video that shows the true capabilities of this camera’s video function.

Here is Vincent Laforet’s “Reverie“.

With the exception of the first image that shows the camera and 15mm lens, below are some of our most recent “fisheye” shots from our new baby:

I’m very jealous. These look really cool. Too bad you don’t have a Canon because I’d love to borrow it. :)
