St. Baldrick’s Headshaving Event - Savannah Mall
It’s odd how some small events seemingly trickle down to bigger events. This photographic journey for us all started with a relatively small camera purchase and a text message. I bought a new camera on Friday morning and was itching to give it a go this weekend. On the following day, Veta got a text from a co-worker saying that his son’s head would get shaved during a cancer fund raising event at Savannah Mall around 4 p.m. We were going to be in the area anyway, and afterall - what’s more fun that shooting some photos and seeing somebody get their head shaved? Well as it turned out, we were in for a treat. Not really expecting to witness more than some close haircuts, we were delighted and warmed to see such a dedicated team of professionals volunteering their Saturday to raise money for one of the most noble causes I can think of. We also got to see some wonderful folks just like all of us, donating their time (and their hair) to do their part in the barber’s chair. A cause just doesn’t get much bigger than raising money for cancer research.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers are experts at raising money for such research and we tip our hats to them. Here’s a little information that we copied from their website:
“St. Baldrick’s is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research. Thousands of volunteers shave their heads in solidarity of children with cancer, while requesting donations of support from friends and family.
At a St. Baldrick’s event, something amazing happens. People who normally shy away from the very thought of childhood cancer find themselves compelled to support this cause after looking into the face of these brave children who are smiling broadly as their friends and family members proudly display their newly shorn heads.
Volunteers and donors see it can be fun to support a serious cause. Young cancer patients and survivors see how many people care. And researchers see St. Baldrick’s funds helping to find cures!”
We’re not official photographers for St. Baldrick’s and we were not commissioned to shoot the event. We just were in the area and we showed up to support a friend of Veta’s. We didn’t know how much the event would bless us. Please consider supporting St. Baldrick’s as well as any other just causes that you see fit. Thank you for taking the time to come out and photograph the day and ME. The photos turned out wonderful with a laugh looking at me getting my head shaved and yet a tear of that little girl. Again thankyou for coming out and the support you gave me for the donation to ST. BALDRICKS. With your support and friends and family we ended up raising $325 and that had to be one of the BEST THINGS I HAVE EVER DONE FOR A CHARITY AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO EVERY YEAR.
